A humble barber who plies his trade on the London thoroughfare of Fleet Street, Barker becomes the victim of corrupt local authority Judge Turpin, and his eerie second in command, Beadle Bamford. Business flourishes after a public display of his skill in a contest with the flamboyant Adolfo Pirelli earns him the patronage of Beadle Bamford, and with him, the Judge.
By The Sea is a song that was sung by Mrs. Lovett to Sweeney Todd. It tells of her dream to be married to Sweeney by the seaside.

The director's conception of the musical, according to the Orange County Register, "negates the automatic assumption that the men confined to Bedlam are gay — they simply love musical theater enough to want to enact one of their favorite stories, and a blood-curdling one at that.
